Among the LP DOCK's features are a USB output and built-in line-level preamp. |
LP DOCK Turntable
The belt-driven LP DOCK features 33 1/3 and 45 RPM settings, a high-quality tonearm and cartridge with anti-skate adjustment. A switch on the back lets you turn the on-board preamp on or off--turn it off when using with a stereo featuring a phono input, or turn it on when you need a line level signal.
iPod Dock
The built-in iPod dock allows you to record your vinyl directly to your iPod or to play back music from your iPod through the turntable's RCA outputs. When not recording, your iPod will also receive a charge, so it's ready to go when you are.
iPod models that support the direct recording feature are as follows: iPod classic 5G and up, iPod nano 2G and up, and iPod 2G and up. All other docking iPod models except generation 1-3 of the standard iPod will play back and charge, but cannot use the direct recording.
USB Connection and Conversion Software Included
Record directly to your computer via the LP DOCK's USB port. Included are EZ Vinyl Converter for PC and EZ Audio Converter for Mac, which both make getting your music into iTunes a breeze. PC users can download a free version of EZ Vinyl Converter with Gracenote MusicID technology, which automatically adds album, artist, and song information for you!
Audacity Software for Advanced Processing
Audacity (PC and Mac) is intended for the advanced user. This application allows for advanced audio editing and processing, such as normalization, noise removal, 78 RPM speed conversion, and automatic track separation.
Stereo Input
For iPod shuffles or other players, you can use the 1/8-inch stereo input to playback or record. The signal is sent to the USB port, so it's a great solution for grabbing music from cassette decks or other sources as well.

Customer Review :
Works, but frustratingly not all the time. Not consistent! : Ion USB Turntable with Universal Dock for iPod
I actually agree with most other reviews here - whether 1, 3, or 5 stars! - but I thought I'd add my 2 cents.
I've digitized dozens of LPs using various turntables over the years - and it's generally a time consuming process.
This particular turntable doesn't make the task all that much easier. And yes, it's pretty low quality. And I actually think its added features will just add frustration for most users.
For my latest efforts, I went straight from the ION to a Mac (OS 10.6) using its USB output. I used Audacity and everything worked OK. If you're not used to sound editing software, I generally wouldn't recommend it unless you're really into music. Plus you'll need to tinker with your computer's audio settings - and possibly mess with them again when you're done.
Bottom line: If your tracks are available on iTunes or Amazon - do yourself a big favor: pay the (small) price, and download instead! (Someone else has already done a LOT of work for you!) If your LPs are out of print or hard to find, it could be worth the trouble. Expect it to take hours and be frustrating - and when you're done - ENJOY!
